Attributes

Product ‘Attributes’ will be talked about in 2 sections. Here we will discuss the why’s, how’s and what’s about attributes, but in the add new products topic, we will discuss them further.

Product Attributes are basically any information, or options that the product has that can be chosen by the customer. Or they can be used as an extra information type, or a selling point. For example, a variable product (A Product with Variations) may have attributes of size and colour. Meaning the customer can choose an XL Black Hoody.

Or for a simple product, an attribute may be that it is from a particular brand. So the additional information may display that it is a fantastic management plan for your website with the attribute/brand of wannawebsite.net

So, let’s get in to it.

Navigate to the attributes page by following Products – Attributes within the side menu structure.

Navigation – Product – Attributes

The Product Attributes page is very similar to categories and tags, however there are some key differences.

Although the ‘Add new attribute area still looks pretty much the same, there are some differing options.

Add new attribute

Name – The attribute name, such as ‘Colour’

Slug – The way it appears in the navigation bar with the URL, leave this blank for it to be auto created from the name.

Enable Archives – We recommend enabling this for specific attributes such as brand names, even if it isn’t something that you wish to actively use. With this enabled, the ‘brand’ attribute terms in the additional information section of the product page become clickable by your customer. If they click a term (Link), they will navigate to a page displaying each of the products from that brand attribute.

Default Sort Order – There are a few options here, Custom Ordering. This allows you to drag and drop the attributes on the product page. Name, name (Numeric) and Term ID. These display the attributes in a alpha, or alphanumeric order.

Next up is the Attributes List.

Attributes List

You can see from the image above, that each attribute is laid out with certain elements visible along the table.

Most have already been covered on the add new attribute page, but you can see under the terms heading, that there is a link for ‘Configure Terms’

Let’s click that now and move to the configuration page.

Configure Attribute Page

You will see that amongst the text at the top left, the smaller heading states ‘Add New Your Attribute Name’ This is the attribute that you have previously added. This one here is called Training Colour Attribute.

As this is a colour main attribute, the terms will be the various colours available to your customers, I will add red, white and blue.

Colour Terms

Next I will navigate back to the main attribute page and add some terms to the Training Size Attribute of Small, Medium and Large.

Now you can see the terms have been added and populated on the attributes page.

Terms Populated

This is the general process of adding the main product attributes that you will use on any of your products, you will then select them per product when you are adding a new product to your store. We will discuss that later in the training package.

Finally, I will add a new attribute to use as that of branding. Lets say we are going to create a new product from a main seller called wannawebsite.net 🙂

Under ‘Configure Terms’ I will create one called ‘View All Our Brand Products’ You can call your attribute and terms what ever you wish.

Wannawebsite.net Term/Link

This will become more apparent later, when we work through adding a new product.
